ProPresenter backgrounds: formats, setup, and where to get them

ProPresenter backgrounds are the motion loops and stills that sit behind lyrics and scripture in the presentation software most churches run. ProPresenter itself is happy with the common formats: MP4 (H.264) for motion, PNG or JPG for stills, at your output resolution, 1080p for most rigs, 4K where the hardware supports it. The format question is the easy part; the real craft is in loop quality, library organization, and where the backgrounds come from.

What files actually behave well?

• MP4, H.264, at output resolution. ProPresenter plays plenty of codecs, but H.264 MP4 at exactly your screen resolution is the boring choice that never stutters on volunteer-run machines.
• True loops. The file's last frame must flow into its first; ProPresenter will loop whatever you give it, including a visible seam, forever. The full craft checklist is in our worship backgrounds guide.
• Stills as PNG. For scripture and announcement backdrops, PNG avoids the JPG artifacts that projectors love to amplify.
• Text-safe composition. Lyrics land center and lower-third; backgrounds busy in those zones fight every slide placed on them.

How should the library be organized?

For the Sunday volunteer, not the media director. A workable scheme: playlists or folders by use (worship, scripture, announcements, countdown), a "this series" folder that holds only the current series set, and a seasonal archive. The failure mode is a 2,000-file dump sorted by download date, where the volunteer picks whatever thumbnail looks calm; the fix is curation, five good choices beat two hundred unsorted ones.

The Sunday-proof test

Load the loop, put your densest lyric slide over it, and run it on the actual output hardware for one full cycle. Readable from the back, no visible seam, no dropped frames on the house machine: pass. Any background that fails on the volunteer's computer fails, whatever it looked like on the designer's.
